When the year began, the Yash Raj Films Website announced that 2004 would be "Bigger and Better… a Landmark Year!" for Yash Raj Films.
With our love for quality storytelling, we aimed to further the special bond we share with our audience with a variety of stories, each narrated with the same excellence that has been our byline for the last 35 years.
The audience has spoken… and the results speak for themselves!
Our first release of the year - "Hum Tum" - took off 2004 in style. With witty lines, catchy songs, and the lovable "Hum Tum" cartoon characters, this film had both the audience, and the box office smiling!
Hum Tum grossed around Rs. 22 crores domestically, and US$ 2.25 million (approximately Rs. 11 crores) in the international market, making it one of the biggest hits of the year!
DHOOM...Explodes on the Screen!
True to its tradition of creating excellent cinema of any genre, Yash Raj Films unveiled an action film that had the audience gripped to their seats and coming back for more and more!
"Dhoom" zoomed into the box office, collecting around Rs. 28 crores domestically and US$ 850,00 (approximately Rs. 4.25 crores) internationally.
With the title song being played everywhere from Night Clubs to shaadi bands, we are proud of rediscovering the spirit of the coinage "Dhoom Macha Le!" used to signify joy, excitement, and good times!
VEER-ZAARA...Steals Hearts Everywhere!
When Yash Chopra's Love Legend told the story of great love, it resonated in the hearts of audiences worldwide. "Veer-Zaara" broke many global box office records and is still going strong to be by far the biggest Bollywood Hit of the year.
In only 5 weeks, with domestic collections of about Rs. 36 crores and global collections approaching a whopping US$ 7 million (approximately Rs. 35 crores), Veer-Zaara has
once again given the audience a unique love story, told uniquely by India's Greatest Romantic. Infact in the UK, USA, Canada & Australia, it remained in the Top 10 Films for all 5 weeks, with a larger per-screen-averages than the Hollywood biggies.
In this momentous year, Yash Raj Films also launched its own music label "Yash Raj Music" with the music of Veer-Zaara. Soon, Yash Raj Music will emerge as a major label to contend with for forthcoming films. Collectively, the music of all the three releases of Yash Raj Films - Veer-Zaara, Dhoom & Hum Tum ruled on the top of all music charts all across the country for over 30 weeks (more than half the year) in 2004.
This year, 'Yash Raj Films Home Entertainment' also launched DVD and VCD titles for the Indian market, through major stores across India. The DVDs already released include Hum Tum, Dhoom, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein, Saathiya, Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Chandni, Silsila, Kabhi Kabhie and Kaala Patthar among others. Soon, the 'Yash Raj Films Home Entertainment' label will also be releasing other classics from the Yash Raj Films' archives.
In 2004, Hollywood Reporter (the renowned international film magazine) carried a survey on the "Biggest Film Production Houses" in the world in which Yash Raj Films was listed as 27th in the world, making it thereby, the Number 1 Film Production House in India.
The year 2004 was only a testimonial of what our Company stands for, and is just another step towards our dream of consolidating Yash Raj Films as the most complete Entertainment Conglomerate of India.
Now it's onto 2005, and once again, Yash Raj Films renews its promise to produce and distribute Cinema that is enjoyed by the nation and Cinema lovers worldwide.
