Bhumi-Pednekar-Profile

Bhumi Pednekar is the best example of self-made success in the competitive world of acting of this generation. Unknown to her, films were always her calling. She joined the YRF casting department and worked on many projects before getting the most unlikely entry into a mainstream Hindi film with DUM LAGA KE HAISHA in 2015. Bhumi played an overweight, confident young woman in small town India who gets married in a traditional society while aiming to be financially independent. Her character broke through body image clichés and empowered women, marking her place as a talent to watch out for. She followed up on this role with the part of a strong woman who stands up for her dignity in the socially relevant blockbuster TOILET EK PREM KATHA in 2017. By holding her own opposite superstar Akshay Kumar, she established her presence as an actor who can mould herself to fit any character on screen. In her career as an actor, she has played standout characters and steadily delivered winning performances. She played a repressed village woman who risks her life to save a young girl in the underrated drama SON CHIRIYA. By choosing films like BALA (2019) and BADHAAI DO (2022) she has shown her support for the LGBTQIA+ community. Her versatile talent won applause in films like SAAND KI AANKH (2019) where she played an octogenarian sharpshooter, DOLLY KITTY AUR WOH CHAMAKTE SITARE (2020) where she played a small-town girl with big dreams of making a living in the capital city; and SHUBH MANGAL SAAVDHAN (2017), which featured her as a young wife dealing with a social taboo in her marriage. In 2023 Bhumi will soon be seen in multiple films with diverse and strong female lead characters. Without pandering to standard heroine parts and by stepping out of her comfort zone regularly, she has disrupted the image of a heroine in Hindi cinema. Because she has delivered unusual and eclectic characters over the years, she is also the most awarded female actor of her generation. In 6 years, she has won over 25 awards, including 2 Filmfare Awards and 2 Screen Awards. Leading media houses have awarded her for her trendsetting personality ,socially responsible choices, and unique work on films. Through her popular social media handles, she has highlighted crucial issues around climate change and given a platform to dedicated climate change activists and has participated in global events to speak about protection of our environment. Bhumi has chosen a lifestyle with minimal carbon footprint as she diligently choses recycling, repurposing, and reusing objects in her home. She grows plants hydroponically and she has trained her staff to observe recycling and to utilise the least amount of electricity. What Bhumi does for the environment / society is an extension of her personality. She has advocated eco-friendly measures in various different ways including selling her preloved clothes to raise awareness of the environmental damage that fast fashion can cause.
