VEER-ZAARA SWEEPS 6th IIFA AWARDS |

13 June 2005: Yash Chopra's love legend Veer-Zaara swept the 6th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards held in Amsterdam on Saturday, 11 June 2005. The awards ceremony took place at the Amsterdam Arena, a massive soccer stadium in the city and drew an audience of approximately 10,000 fans. The movie won the Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Music, Best Story, Best Supporting Actress & Best Make-up awards. Veer-Zaara, one of the most successful films of 2004 won the prestigious Best Film award. Shah Rukh Khan was the obvious choice for the Best Actor award, and his win surprised few. The Best Music Director award was given to the late Madan Mohan. The late genius' son Sanjeev Kohli who re-created Madan Mohan's tunes for the film, paid a sentimental tribute to his father, who in spite of being a powerhouse of talent, never won a popular award during his lifetime. Yash Raj Films' Dhoom also won 3 awards. John Abraham was adjudged the Best Actor in a Negative Role. Sunidhi Chauhan was awarded theBest Female Playback Singer for the song “Dhoom Machale...” and Alan Amin also won an award for Best Action Director. Yash Raj Films almost swept the 6th IIFA Awards, winning a total of 11 awards across various categories for their 3 releases of 2004 – Veer-Zaara, Dhoom & Hum Tum. And not only that, the highlight dance number of the evening was also from Yash Raj Films’ recent release ‘Bunty aur Babli’. The crowd almost went wild when Abhishek Bachchan, giving his maiden performance on an international stage, was joined by his father Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai for the dance performance on the song Kajra Re from the film ‘Bunty aur Babli’. Established in 2000, the awards celebrate the prolific Indian film industry, which produces upwards of 800 movies a year. The annual gala is held outside of India each year in order to promote the country's cinema to international audiences. This year, more than 100 top Bollywood actors joined about 300 producers and directors in Amsterdam for the ceremony.
