| On Saturday 19th August 2006, the Southall Broadway Safer Neigbourhood Team in partnership with Ealing Council Trading Standards recovered approximately 10,000 counterfeit DVD’s and CD’s from a commercial address in King Street, Southall, Middlesex. According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) over £50,000 pounds worth of goods (street value) were seized following the raid at Umana Halal, No 23, King Street, Southall, Middlesex The partnership visited the premises at 1430hrs on 19th August following intelligence and information received from a variety of sources including the community, which indicated that it was involved in the sale and distribution of illegal, and counterfeit DVDs and CDs. Four (4) Asian Males aged 18yrs, 18yrs, 21yrs and 28yrs were arrested in connection with the seizure. They have all now been released from police custody and are subject to an investigation by Ealing Council Trading Standards Officers for offences relating to the Trades Mark Act 1994, Video Recording Act 1984/1993 and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. Police Sergeant Shahid Malik, Southall Broadway Safer Neighbourhoods Team states: “This is an excellent example of partnership working. It portrays the results, which can be achieved through information sharing and intelligence led partnership operations. We will continue to work in partnership to specially target and ultimately stop local crime networks that are involved in counterfeit activity in Ealing borough.” Mohammed Tariq, Ealing Council Trading Standards states: “Ealing Trading Standards will continue to work closely with the police and the British Phonographic Industry to ensure that what’s sold on the streets is legal, so that everyone, consumer, trader and the industry, benefits.” Notes: According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) CD piracy now generates an estimated £77 million annually for criminal enterprise, increasing by 37% in 2004 alone.
