 | | Before entering the cinema hall to see laaga, I thought as where am I going to cry throughout this boring film, but actually when I watching it, I was stunned.
I was really crying but not bored. Rani is really a Rani of Bollywood.
Hats off to Yash Raj Films. | | anjali sawant | |

 | Laga Chunari has been heavily criticised by most critics, as being regressive. However, the film is quite good, as not as bad as the reviews portray. Perhaps the critics have lost their connection to the real India, are are interested only in glamour and glitz. This film needs to be seen through the eyes of a true Indian, who knows how hard life is, for the average Indian woman, especially in the smaller towns and villages.
The story revolves around 2 sisters from Benaras-Rani and Konkana-whose parents-Jaya Bachchan and Anupam Kher-are poor, inundated with loans and court cases, and ekeing out an existence. Rani, who is uneducated, decides to try her luck in the big, bad city of Mumbai.
Unfortunately, the only work she gets, which earns her loads of money, is the the oldest profession known to mankind, namely prostitution. Rani is an unwilling victim, who is pushed into this profession. She earns well, the family thrives, and all is well, till her sister arrives in Mumbai, for a job.
Soon, the sister, Konkana who is in love with Kunal Kapoor, discovers the truth, and forces Rani to come to Benares to attend her wedding. The climax of the film is set at the wedding of Konkana, and is surprisingly satisfying, in all aspects.
The story, screenplay and camerawork is first rate. The music by Shantanu Moitra is competent, with a few catchy songs thrown in. Of the cast, both Rani and Konkana are a delight to watch as they carry the film on their shoulders, and are ably supported by Kunal, Jaya and Anupam, with Abhishekh making a special, special appearance.
The film is honest, and one has only to read the papers everyday to see how many girls are sold off, or take to this profession. Today, even college students are known to double as escorts, to make a fast buck. There is nothing regressive, and if a woman is good looking and uneducated, she is going to be exploited in this male dominated world, where the male is only interested in those few minutes betwen the sheets, and has no real value or respect for a female. Pradeep Sarkar, the director, has a penchant for visuals, and for telling a story. The film is absorbing, and realistic. Go for it.

 | | I saw laaga chunri men daag yesterday with my friend in canada. I heared the movie review that its not a good movie but still went to watch it. After watching the movie I realised that those reviews were not true. This movie is a great movie. Konkana was too good in the movie, she has given her more than 100%. Rani as usual really good. Kunal kappor was alright, it could be better. And Abhishek has a little part , but it was well done by him. Over all it would be one of the best movies in the year 2007. And one more thing the choreography also could be better….it was not like as yash chopra's movies has choreography in it. But the movie was awesome. Like it a lot!!!

 | | I totally enjoyed this movie. Everything about it was splendedly done. The colors, the back ground score, the songs and especially; THE most important part of the film, are the performances. Everybody put in a grand performance. My faveorites are in order; Badki, Chutki, Sabitri, Rohan and Vivan. Shiv Shankar Sahay was totally good in his spineless performance as the head of the household. He was too good. | | Aisha (New York, USA) | |

 | | Its been years when we get to watch a film like 'Laaga chunri mein daag', Rani is superb as usual , however i should say that she has yet climb a step ahead in acting in this film. All other stars like konkana sen, jaya maam, abhishek and kunal have good a great job. And a special thanks too the director who made such a beautiful film and made us fell in love with Benaras. For Rani i would lke to say that i wish her all the best in her life and expect much more great performance in years to come, also a great thumbs up to the production house who has keep up to its name..on the whole a worth watching movie.
